Boat Batteries Vs. Car Batteries

The majority of people get so excited about buying, owning, and sailing a boat that maintenance of it is often overlooked. Both cars and boats are difficult to maintain and they require constant care. The beauties of the water and the soothing feeling you get when you are out in the open are priceless – the same as the beauties of the road. But if you want to enhance the adventure, you must know a little bit about its vital parts, like boat batteries and car batteries. There are different types for each ride and we will see what are some of the things that they have in common.

Boat Batteries

There are two types of batteries for boats, the starting batteries, and deep-cycle batteries. The first one is as the name implies in charge of starting the boat’s engine. They are created with thinner casing along with a large number of lead plates inside it. Such a concept allows more surface area to be introduced with a massive amount of energy quickly for the starting of the engine of the boat.

Note, before opting for a boat battery you must consider how much power the particular type of engine needs, with additions like pumps and sensors, IT requirements, etc.  When the boat is on the water running, the alternator will recharge the battery allowing extended sealing time at your request. The most popular option for this is the trolling motor battery, according to experts from Trolling Battery Advisor. It will charge up the engine of your boat and is recommended for fishing and small trips usually.

The second type of power supply for boats is deep-cycle batteries. This type of batteries used for boating accessories such as radios, GPS,  fish-finders,  trolling motors, etc. The deep-cycle batteries are created differently in comparison to the previous one they have a smaller number of thicker lead plates that can withstand the deep cycling of recharge cycles.

“The fact is that this kind of power source for boat accessories requires far less energy than the starting batteries,”- said Carlos Herrera from marinecarburetors.com. They don’t need a constant recharge and is done usually once a day. There is also a dual-purpose battery, which can unite the two mentioned batteries. It doesn’t have the same starting power and possesses a shorter time available on the water for your boat.

The significant part of your battery-life will depend on maintaining its state and working abilities. You must understand that a standard boat battery can lose up to a third of its charge per month when it is not used. You will hardly get to see the 10-year mark on the battery if you neglect the maintenance of it for more than four months and leave it in resting in the storage. Remember, maintenance is half of a job well done.

Car Batteries

We can talk about different car batteries today, which hasn’t been the case a few decades ago. Of course, the first thing we think about is an automotive battery, which provides electric current to a motor vehicle. Without it, you couldn’t start your engine. This is something that doesn’t require any particular maintenance. You can recharge it with the help of others and those complicated cables – although it is not that complicated at all. Also, you can replace it after a while, which is also a good thing to do.

The second type of car batteries we can refer to appear with electric cars. For example, Tesla uses lithium-ion batteries that power the vehicle, instead of the petrol engine. That is quite the advancement in technology, but these batteries are still in the early stages of the development. Even so, every year, their range increases, they charge more quickly but still, they are not getting any lighter.

Once that happens we will have a killer four-wheeler! And it is just a matter of time before that takes place. As you can see, batteries of all sorts are used in road vehicles and vessels.

Hopefully, you now have the idea of what boat battery types are and the basic car batteries and what the differences are. With this in mind, you can learn more about the maintenance as well as the operational process of these.
