Acura Precision Concept – Masterfully Crafted

Acura’s current cars are mostly based on different Honda platforms which make them a bit toned down in comparison to some of their rivals. In order to depart from Honda, they released the Acura Precision Concept back at the start of 2016. The car looks like nothing else Acura has ever delivered, and it is definitely a step in the right direct. So far there is very little information about the specifics of the car, but it seems that a production model is in store and just around the corner. Why are we so sure? Well, despite being released more than half a year ago, the car has been showcased recently at Pebble Beach, and that makes it clear that they do have plans for it.

The Platform

Like we said, one of the largest problems of current Acura lineup is the Honda front wheel drive chassis. The new Precision seems to be a bit more different. For starters, it may be the first Acura to use a rear wheel drive setup which they would start to use on all their future models.

This should allow them to compete with cars from BMW and even Lexus or Infiniti without having to compromise on performance. There is still no word on the release date or the price of the car. However, it seems that the Precision concept might just be the predecessor of their future flagship sedan.

The Design

The Acura Precision Concept looks like no other car in Acura’s roster. It is a long and wide sedan which also happens to be much lower than the average of its class. On top of that, it has a really edgy appearance to it which gives the impression of a true sports car.

This design is also accented by its low and sloping roof which makes the car look like a four-door coupe. On the production model, we might see the same type of diamond-shaped grille and aggressive headlights. The back also brings that ready for production design with the only exception being the exhaust which is just too high for a production vehicle.

The Interior of Acura Precision Concept

Unfortunately, the cabin of the Precision concept doesn’t look as ready as the exterior. Here the car offers a large wide-screen in the center of the dashboard coupled with a really wide center stack. We might see a similar setup in the production model. However, don’t expect to get the same four-seat layout or even the minimalistic look. Instead, we expect something more in line with Acura’s latest offerings with a few tweaks and improvements.

Engine and Transmission

So far they haven’t said a word about the powertrain of the Acura Precision Concept. Latest reports suggest that it may be a hybrid, similar to their current flagship sedan. There are some problems, though, one of them being the rumored rear wheel drive platform. If this will happen Acura could offer an all-wheel drive model with the help of two electric motors. The only real issue would be that their only other car using a similar setup is the NSX which is very expensive.

By comparison, the production version of the Precision would be more than two times less than it. Some industry experts suggested that the Precision could use a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 coupled with three electric motors. The end result would be as much as 400 horsepower and over 400 lb-ft of torque. Also, the car could use a large set of batteries in order to offer over 20 miles of all-electric range. This setup would make sense, but it wouldn’t provide the required performance for it to compete with cars like the BMW M5 or the Mercedes E63 AMG.
